The Mevlevi Sema Ceremony is performed by the Mevlevi Rituals Ensemble of the Wisdom Civilization Research Center (IRFA). The word Sema literally means "to hear" or "to perceive." In Mevlevi tradition, it refers to a spiritual act of worship in which the dervishes rotate from right to left around the heart, accompanied by sacred music and rhythmic movement. As the symbolic form of remembrance (dhikr) in the Mevlevi Order, the purpose of the Sema is to achieve spiritual elevation and draw closer to Allah (SWT). During the time of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, the Sema was performed as a spontaneous expression of religious devotion and mystical ecstasy, without a fixed ceremonial structure. According to tradition, Mevlana began performing the Sema after his life-changing meeting with Shams of Tabriz, who profoundly influenced his spiritual journey. Over time, this mystical practice evolved into the formal ceremony known today. The Sema Hall at the Wisdom Civilization Research Center (IRFA) is inspired by the architectural style of historic Mevlevi lodges (Mevlevihanes) found throughout Türkiye and around the world. Designed in a refined neoclassical style, the hall offers visitors an authentic atmosphere in which to experience one of the most iconic spiritual traditions of Anatolian culture.

Embark on a spiritual journey into the sacred world of Mevlevi music and the mesmerizing Sema ceremony. The performance begins with a tribute to the Prophet Muhammad, followed by a soulful ney (reed flute) solo and the Veled-i Ekrem ritual. The ceremony then continues with the four Selam sections, each representing a different stage of the spiritual journey.
A talented ensemble of 13 performers—including the Postnişin (ceremonial leader), Baş Semazen (chief whirling dervish), five Semazens, and a Mutrip ensemble of six musicians—will perform in perfect harmony. Timeless compositions by renowned composers such as Itrî and Pir Adil Çelebi accompany the sacred whirling ritual. The enchanting sounds of the ney, oud, and drums create a mystical atmosphere, drawing you into the heart of Sufi tradition.
