Deriving from springs in a cliff almost 200 m high overlooking the plain, calcite-laden waters have created at Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) an unreal landscape, made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins. The terraces were formed by running warm spring water containing calcium bicarbonate, at a temperature of 35C.When the water loses its carbon dioxide it leaves limestone deposits. During your visit to Hierapolis, an open-air museum, you will see of the largest ancient graveyard containing over 1200 sarcophagi, many of which are as big as a small house. The Great Theatre, the tomb of St. Philip, the Roman Baths, the gymnasium that is used as a museum and Apollo Temple are the other attractive ruins.
