Itinerary

Day 1

(Lunch included)

Amasya boasts both an impressive history as an ancient settlement and breathtaking natural scenery, making it a must-visit destination in Turkey.

One highlight of the trip is the Hazeranlar Mansion, a stunning example of civil architecture from the 19th century located in Yaliboyu. Today, it serves as an ethnographic museum showcasing a collection of carpets, kilims, kitchenware, jewelry, and garments, providing insight into local life in the 19th century.

Next is Amasya Castle, situated on Harsena Mount at an elevation of 700 meters. Historians believe it was constructed by Pontus King Mithridates, or Karsan, or Harsana. Throughout history, the castle has been ruled by Persian, Roman, Pontic, and Byzantine rulers before eventually falling under Turkish control. Interestingly, Ottoman Shahzadeh Celebi Mehmed sought refuge in the castle when fleeing from the invading troops of Timur in the 15th century. Don't miss the Cilanbolu Well, located in the middle of the castle, and consisting of 150 steps leading down to the water.

The Rock Tombs are another must-visit attraction in the city. These tombs, which date back to the Hellenistic period and were carved vertically into the limestone rocks, were once used by Pontus Kings, who made Amasya their capital until 26 BC.

The Ferhat and Sirin waterfall, which served as the backdrop for the classic love story of Ferhat and Sirin in Turkish literature, is also worth a visit. Additionally, the Gok Madrasa, a mosque, tomb, and madrasah built in 1267 by the Governor of Amasya, Seyfettin Torumtay, is a fine example of Seljuk architecture. Its dome is adorned with blue (turquoise) tiles, giving the complex its name. Finally, don't forget to explore the Burmali Minare Mosque and Beyazit Mosques, both of which are important landmarks in Amasya.
